AFRL awarding up to $3.5 Million for research of UAS Integration Technology

The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) invites proposals to support Research Projects on Technologies Related to the Integration of Unmanned Aircraft System in the Airspace Environment. Multiple awards may be made. Eligibility is unrestricted domestically. Proposals will be accepted on a continuing basis until Aug 6, 2019. FAA gives ND expanded UAS flight testing capabilities


Unmanned aerial systems (UAS) development in North Dakota received a boost from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) this week while also marking the first flight of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) from a general aviation airport.

The FAA gave the Northern Plains UAS Test Site approval to expand operations and night flight testing capabilities throughout the state. The University of North Dakota (UND) last week noted a flight test of the Northrup Grumman SandShark UAV conducted from the Lakota, North Dakota, public airport in conjunction with the Northern Plains UAS Test Site.

NASA awards UND Space Studies three grants totaling $2.12 million


The University of North Dakota Department of Space Studies was recently awarded three grants totaling $2.16 million by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

All three grants are augmented by North Dakota state match funding totaling close to $1 million.

R&D Funds available for Digital Manufacturing Technologies in Six Technical Areas


The Digital Manufacturing and Design Innovation Institute invites whitepapers to support R&D Projects on Digital Manufacturing Technologies in Six Technical Areas:

• Completing the Model-Based Definition (DMDII-15-11) – to demonstrate Model-Based Definition (MBD) as the key to gathering, organizing and managing product/process data within the digital thread. Approximately $2 million may be made available to support up to four awards. Whitepapers are due Oct 22.

NSF makes $9 Million available for Partnerships for Innovation Program

The Directorate for Engineering invites proposals for the Partnerships for Innovation Program: Accelerating Innovation Research-Technology Translation – awards to move previously NSF-funded research results with promising commercial potential along the path toward commercialization. Approximately $9 million may be made available to support up to 56 awards. Eligibility is restricted to institutions of higher education. Letters of intent are due Sep 8; applications are due Oct 9. Agricultural UAS research expanding across state


GRAND FORKS, N.D. — Unmanned aircraft will soon be buzzing overhead at several agricultural research centers around North Dakota.

North Dakota State University received approval Friday to expand its unmanned aircraft systems research program from the University of North Dakota UAS Research and Compliance Committee, a group that vets research proposals.

Last week, nearly two-dozen North Dakota aerospace and aviation leaders were in Atlanta for the AUVSI Unmanned Systems North America 2015 conference to showcase the state's dominance in America's hottest new industry.

As one of the largest blocks of airspace available in the country for flying unmanned aerial systems (UAS) with the goal of integrating UAS into the national airspace, the delegation will be at the show to discuss how the nation's first operational UAS test site is advancing research and has become increasingly open for businesses in this high profile industry.
