Northland UAS Maintenence Program Takes Flight in the Corridor

Northland Community and Technical College's Unmanned Aerial Systems Maintenance program has launched to immediate success. Officially opened this summer at NCTC's Thief River Falls campus, the new program plans to have around 70 students enrolled in courses and training this fall, with plans for future growth.

Department of Defense awarding $40 million to Universities for Equipment to Support Research

The Department of Defense (DoD) announces the Fiscal Year 2012 Defense University Research Instrumentation Program (DURIP), a part of the University Research Initiative (URI). DURIP is designed to improve the capabilities of U.S. institutions of higher education to conduct research and to educate scientists and engineers in areas important to national defense, by providing funds for the acquisition of research equipment.

Rise of the Machine: International Aerial Robotics Competition

A fully autonomous small unmanned aerial systems infiltrates an enemy base, retrieves a flash drive with sensitive data on it and escapes undetected. That is the mission of the International Aerial Robotics Competition being held at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center in Grand Forks, North Dakota August 8-12.

The dedication ceremony, ribbon-cutting and self-guided tours of the new L-3/UND UAS Training Center (Building 607, Grand Forks Air Force Base) will begin at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 10. UND and L-3 Link Simulation and Training (L-3), North Dakota Governor’s Office, the State’s Congressional delegation, Base Realignment Impact Committee members, Grand Forks Air Force Base leaders, local dignitaries and other special guests will be in attendance.

USDA announces $1 million for Critical Agricultural Materials Program

USDA NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF FOOD AND AGRICULTURE announces the availability of grant funds and requests applications for the Critical Agricultural Materials Program for fiscal year (FY) 2011 to develop and demonstrate industrial paints, coatings, adhesives for composites, and innovative aerial delivery systems or components that are manufactured from domestically produced crop or woody materials. The amount available for support of this program in FY 2011 is approximately $1,000,000.

North Dakota is fortunate to enjoy two flagship research universities and even more fortunate given the new collaboration between them as a means to better serve our state’s interests.

That said, an understandable question we occasionally hear is, “What’s so important about research universities?”
