North Dakota’s Research Ranking Levels Off

North Dakota’s research and development ranking among the states has leveled off in the high 40’s for the years 2009 through 2010 according to new data from the National Science Foundation. The latest NSF data is for the three primary performers of R&D in each state (federal, business and university). NSF also calculates a state’s R&D intensity, as an index for R&D spending that takes total R&D spending as a percentage of gross state product (GSP).

________TOTAL_____Overall________________Sector______________R&D Intensity
($ in millions)

Overall R&D increased by 5% from 2009-2010 with the biggest increase ($18 million) among universities and colleges. R&D increased by $5 million in the business sector with a $1 million dollar decrease in research conducted by the federal government in the state.

North Dakota’s R&D intensity increased from 1 percent to 1.3 percent of GSP from 2009-2010, which was enough of an increase to move up one rank among the states, i.e. from 37th to 36th place.
