Northland UAS Maintenence Program Takes Flight in the Corridor

Northland Community and Technical College's Unmanned Aerial Systems Maintenance program has launched to immediate success. Officially opened this summer at NCTC's Thief River Falls campus, the new program plans to have around 70 students enrolled in courses and training this fall, with plans for future growth.

Program directors hope, reports Minnesota Public Radio, to "attract former Northwest Airlines mechanics who already have basic skills and could go directly into the UAS program." As the UAS field continues to grow by leaps and bounds, there will be demand for skilled technicians to service and maintain the expanding fleet of public and private unmanned vehicles. Scott Fletcher, COO of Northland Aviation, in an interview with MPR, states that "There is a significant need for qualified maintenance technicians in the UAS arena... Some of the manufacturers have expressed an interest in coming in to recruit our graduates. So the jobs are there."

The new program builds on NCTC's long established Aviation Maintenance Technician (AMT) training program, which has been in operation for over 50 years. The UAS certification program and training center is the first of its kind in the nation.
