UND Research Institute for Autonomous Systems

The UND Research Institute for Autonomous Systems (RIAS) is created to help integrate the expertise, infrastructure, activities and resources of UND and the North Dakota University System, with the goal of establishing ongoing and sustainable externally funded unmanned and autonomous research leading to economic development and diversification in the state of North Dakota. The RIAS will help to brand North Dakota as the leading destination for cutting edge unmanned and autonomous technology and workforce development.

Grand Sky UAS Business & Aviation Park

Grand Sky is located adjacent to the Grand Forks Air Force Base in northeast North Dakota, 90 miles south of the Canadian border. The hub is just 20 minutes west of Grand Forks, a thriving city of 60,000 citizens, and home to the University of North Dakota (UND). In fact, the university is the nation’s most respected school for training pilots and one of the frontrunners in unmanned aviation studies.


Established in 2011, Altavian is an unmanned aircraft solutions provider that integrates engineering and manufacturing with services that enable the technology for federal, state, local, and commercial clients. With 25 employees and growing, Altavian has the engineering, manufacturing, and operations expertise needed to help you bring unmanned aircraft capabilities to your organization, large or small.

Northern Plains UAS Test Site

Collaborate with FAA and industry partners to develop equipment, systems, rules, and procedures to safely integrate unmanned aircraft into the NAS without negatively impacting existing general or commercial aviation.

Unmanned Applications Institute, International (UAI)

Unmanned Applications Institute, International is a not-for-profit organization committed to supporting and enabling the integration and development of the UAS industry in North Dakota and the region. We accomplish this goal through collaborative relationships within all disciplines in the region and nationally. Our team comprises highly experienced leaders in their field. Their experience and access to vast areas of industry ensure dynamic synergies in solving problems.

Unmanned Aircraft Systems Engineering

Unmanned Aircraft Systems Engineering is a faculty and student engineering consortium that develops payloads and new applications for the UAS industry at the University of North Dakota.

The concept for the UASE Team first came about back in 2000 with the AEROCam and Agcam projects in conjunction with the aviation department.

Center for UAS Research, Education and Training

In 2006, UND was named as a Department of Defense Center of Excellence for UAV Education. The goal of this Center of Excellence is to commercialize UAVs for a vast application in the private sector, creating highly skilled and highly paid professional positions throughout North Dakota. Partnering with the Center for Innovation, this Center of Excellence is positioned to introduce newly discovered technologies directly into the marketplace via partnerships with entrepreneurial companies.
